Dying olive trees

On our journey through southern Italy we keep seeing dead olive trees. An introduced bacterium kills the old, gnarled trees and deprives them of water. The most affected region is the Salento in southern Italy. According to a 2019 estimate, 50,000 hectares had already been lost with around 4 million olive trees no longer productive.
