When on the third day the rain stopped in the evening, we went looking again. Patience pays off and we will find the birds. More than 1000 birds we see in a field. Their screeching can be heard from afar. The birds are up to 1.30 m tall and have a wingspan of up to 2.50 m.
In long chains and with a lot of screeching, they fly across the darkening sky to their night resting places in the water. In the distance we can see the first ones standing in shallow water.
Here in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern they rest for a few weeks and then fly on with breaks in the Ruhr area to Lac-du-Der in northern France.
Thank you for such an informative post.
We have seen them on Lac-du-Der on the way to Domy.
