Nicholas Copernicus

The town of Frombork (Frauenburg) is located on the banks of the mainland. Opposite we have spent the night two days before.

The Frauenburg Cathedral with its tower-defended wall ring was built in the 14th and 15th century.

One the few surviving originals is the “Madonna on the Crescent Moon”.

The astronomer Nicholas Copernicus spent 40 years of his life here until he died. Here he had time for his studies, and through years of observing the stars, he could prove that the earth moves its circles around the sun and not vice versa.

Inside the belfry is a Foucault pendulum, which proves the rotation of the earth.

The view from the top of the tower is magnificent.

  1. This is just the best. I read it when you first posted it but then again today. Wonderful – thank you very much.
