Actually we want to drive along the coast, but the French Navi has its pitfalls… It is vacation time and therefore it doesn’t really matter…
There is a beautiful campsite right behind the big dam which closes the Lauwersmeer to the Northsea, directly on the water.
The Lauwersmeer is a former bay of the Northsea. In 1969 the bay was closed and the Lauwersmeer created. Nature changed and so did the flora and fauna. The area became a Nationalpark in 2003. The large lock transports the excess water from the polder areas in the open sea.
After all the culture during the last days we long for nature. In the sunshine we bike along the dike viewing the waddenzee and the Northsea, the sheep and the birds.
There is a nice café on the way.
The way back leads along the Lauwersmeer.
And eventually it is warm enough to sit outside!
