October 19th: Rochefort

What does one do when it rains? Right – you visit a museum.

Since 1997 in the old marine arsenal of Rochefort is worked an original replica of the historical frigate L’Hermione, the ship Marquis de Lafayette sailed to Boston in 1780 to support the American colonist in their struggle for independency. The departure for the journey across the Atlantic now is planned for 2013.

The huge building of the “Corderie Royal” from the 17th century is 374m long. To support the fundament in the swampy ground large oaktree forests had to be cut down. With the monstrous machines ropes of 200m length and 40cm width could be produced. Unfortunately it is not possible to see the enormous hall in its total length inside because it is used for temporary exhibitions.
